CHEER - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS


When does the season start?

Our season begins on August 1.

When and where is practice held?

The practice locations are to be determined. Practices are no more than 10 hours per week before Labor Day. Practices are between 1 and 2.5 hours depending on the age of the team. Practice days are selected by the head coach.

How many games do the cheerleaders have during the season?

Cheering is made up in two component; Sideline Cheer and Competition Cheer. Cheerleaders must participate in both components in order to be on a cheer roster.

  • Flag teams play eight (8) games with a Final Flag Fest at the end of the season for a total of nine (9) games. The football season usually ends at the end of the October.

  • Mitey-Mite plays ten (10) games plus a Championship Bowl game for a total of eleven (11) games. The football season usually ends at the beginning of November.

  • Jr Pee Wee, Pee Wee, JV and Varsity teams play ten (10) games with possible playoff and championship games. The football season usually ends in late November.

Where are the games played?

Home games are held at Great Oak High School football stadium or Birdsall Park. We are a part of the West Coast Conference and travel throughout San Diego, Imperial and Southern Riverside Counties. Please visit the Conference website for more information on field locations.

When are the cheer performances and competitions?

  • The Flag, Mitey-Mite, Jr Pee Wee, Pee Wee, JV and Varsity teams are competition teams with the goal of making it to Nationals in Orlando, Florida. The competitions on the road to nationals include (only teams that place 1st or 2nd will advance):

    • Locals - Conference Cheer and Dance competition, at a local school.

    • Regionals - WESCON Regional Cheer and Dance Championship, in Southern California $$

    • Nationals - National Cheer and Dance Competition, Orlando, FL $$

      $$ The costs associated with competition are in addtion to registration and uniform fees.

Do all cheerleaders participate in fundraising activities?

Fundraising is an important component of cheerleading, however, it is not required. All other fundraisers will be determined at each squad level in order to provide some financial relief for parents in meeting travel expenses, or other needs as determined by the squad, coaches and parents.

How can I volunteer?

Pop Warner Football and Cheer teams depend on volunteers. The TVPW Cheer teams need volunteers for head coach, assistant coaches and student demonstrators. Please email cheerplyeragent@tvpw.org for more information.

What is the purpose of a cheer fitting?

Cheer uniforms are made to order. Cheer uniform sizes can be very different from other types of clothing. The uniforms are on two (2) year cycles and are renewed on odd years.

  • If you miss the fitting for your uniform, it may not be ordered on time and you may be charged a late fee to cover shipping costs. Your uniform is not guaranteed to arrive on time for the season to begin.

  • Uniforms will not be ordered until a fitting has been completed.

  • Parents or guardians must sign off on the sizes to be ordered and are responsible for the selection of the uniform size.

  • Please have you child wear a sports bra and spanx for their uniform fitting. First time cheerleaders may wear a bathing suit. There may be other items to try on and there are no fitting rooms available.

  • Please make sure you account for your child’s growth since we have to order uniforms several months in advance.

If my child cheered in the prior year’s season, do they need to purchase a new uniform?

The uniform cycle is every two (2) years. New uniforms will be purchased on odd years. We can help facilitate uniform exchanges for used uniforms when we are not purchasing new ones.

How much does it cost to participate in the cheer program?

Each cheerleader will purchase a number of items for their personal use. If you are a new cheerleader, you will need to purchase all items for their level as listed on the TVPW Cheer Pricing chart. If you cheered in a prior season, you may need to order a larger uniform. We can help facilitate uniform exchanges for used uniforms when we are not purchasing new ones.

Are payment plans available?

The cost of registration can be paid in installments. Uniform costs and other costs are due prior to the items being ordered. Please check with your head coach for due dates.

What is the league obligation? How are the funds raised? How are the funds spent?

The league obligation is the cost of advertising for the program, the required conference fees and Pop Warner requirements. The funds are raised by a combination of the league fundraising and any individual team fundraising that the team might choose to do; as stated above fundraising is not required.
